I know those guns have a use and there's a practical reason as to why they have them.

It's just that from the point of view of someone who come from a mostly gun-free society, that's quite a culture shock.
No.

Fair enough.

But phrasing it as "the sheer madness of the few american gun nuts I know" tends to carry some negative implications there. ;)

I think my household needs at least 12 guns, but that's for two adults.

And actually it is less common than you'd think. There are about 1.1 times as many guns as population (110%), but 40% of households have guns. The number went back up from 33% after Obama was elected--it had been falling beforehand.

Jung isn't Jub, right? For some reason I thought you'd changed your name to that on SD.net and flipped out at how you were acting in that thread, and then I realized I was probably going crazy from overwork.

Of course. Lets see, the current inventory:

Val's SKS: deer, target shooting
My SKS: spare
Mosin Nagant: personal interest, target shooting, mostly retired because the stock is too nice to use
Remington 700: hunting, target shooting, precision shooting
Remington 870: skeet, waterfowl, defence, small game, possibly large game
My daughters .410: skeet, small game
Marlin 336BL: personal interest (love a lever action), mostly used by my son now who wants it for his first deer.
Kel-Tec Sub 2000: just for shits and giggles
Rossi Ranch Hand: ^
Traditions flintlock: blackpowder is both fun and scary

Edit: forgot the Ruger 77/44, bought purely because I wanted a .44mag. Good brush gun.

No they are separate people. Jub needs to get a mocked around with a big dick.

No.

And you're not even American!

Which is why you're my favorite person ever. Because if I was ever to get involved for serious in these things, I'd reply every time someone mentions American Gun Nuts with, "Hey I know a guy who owns ten guns. He's Canadian. WHAT NOW???"

Eleven actually, I forgot one. ;)

Seriously though, different guns for different circumstances. My quest for a single utility rifle has lead me on a merry chase, a totally unsuccessful one at that.

No, my username on SDN is still Junghalli. You may have gotten the impression I changed my username because I haven't posted on SDN for several months (my last post there was on April 9th).

Jub is also famous for that time he said First Nations have it easier than white men and get unfair privileges.

I vaguely remember the time when Jub was arguing for something I could probably have agreed with, but doing so in such a fucktastic way that I would've argued against him even if I agreed with his general point. Or at least what I would have assumed his general point to be. It was kinda hard to tell.

I don't remember what it was, though.

Lets see if I can remember them all.

Remington 700: Alphabet Soup
Mosin: Mo
My SKS: Sasha
Val's SKS: Aleksandra
Remington 870: Thumper
Kel Tec: Katie
Marlin: Dirty Thirty
Ruger: Harriet

The .410 and the Ranch Hand are nameless (the latter till it gets a stock and becomes a proper rifle), and the flintlock is Black Betty.

Is it me or is every argument Jub makes starting from a 'how it impacts me/how I see it' point of view, and that his inability to move beyond that POV is the root of all his problems (in other words, he seems incapable of looking at the argument from any perspective but his own.)

Also for trek: One of the difficulties in debating it is that the writing was rather diverse, and that could be a double edged sword. It meant that episodes had the potential to explore lots of different concepts, but on the other hand it also meant having multiple writers conflicting in their points of view on the setting - how the characters acted/thought, how the organzations functioned, etc. I think it was at its worst when it came to Voyager, which is why it sometimes gets viewed so negatively.

Connor, that's exactly it. He is so totally blinded by his privilege that he can't even conceive of how things might ve different for other people. It's also pretty interesting to see him just assuming that the way Canada does something (even if it doesn't in the way he envisions) is automatically the best and that other methods aren't just less effective, they're backwards and wrong.

Man Voyager isn't bad at all
I'd definitely rate it above DS9. The best episodes of Voyager are on par with the best of TNG, and the worst episodes aren't worse than S1 TNG (and better than the bad TOS episodes).

I'm half-convinced that a lot of people are harsher on it because Janeway is a woman.
