Will you use all of the media features? I will admit that allowing BDs, DVDs, and CDs is a huge bonus point for the XBox One. Fucking Sony taking away DVDs and CDs is a joke, as well as 3D BD playback.

The PS4 doesn't do 3d playback?

i probably won't use a lot of it honestly, if i want to watch a movie i use netflix or redbox and don't even have cable
the improved social stuff and kinect shits are what sold me, plus my friends are on xbox and not ps4

You're both correct. The XBox doesn't do 3D BD either, but that's fine. Sony owns Blu-ray and they didn't even launch the console with 3D playback. Such bs.
Apparently a patch was released on day one to allow DVDs.
Personally, I'd wait six months to a year before buying either so you can wait for glitches to be fixed, better games to come out, etc.

well I'll probably wait until my PS3 actually breaks down before even thinking about the next gen consoles
I didn't even realise they were actually out yet lol
is there any word on backwards compatibility?

If I recall in the case of the PS4, its architecture is different from the PS3's, so backwards compatibility is likely too costly.

Neither PS4 nor Xbox one are backwards-compatible to any degree.

PS4 was going to be able to play ps3 games through the Gaikai streaming service, but a while back Sony just stopped talking about it, and nobody knows what the status of it is.

but that wouldn't let me just put in my old disks and play, anyway, right?

In theory it could, effectively using the game discs solely as a DRM measure. Sony statements so far have amounted to 'Gaikai will let you play ps3 games on ps4' and ended there, so trying to say if they will or not is pretty much reading tea leaves. Not doing it allows for potentially greater profit, but so does one-upping Microsoft.

Asking for backwards compatibility is really asking way, way too much. It would require putting an entire PS3 inside of the PS4, or an entire xbox360 inside an xbone.
The problem with consoles being weird, strange, unique architecture not found anywhere else means that to get games running on different hardware, you need to: 1) literally duplicate the hardware, or 2) emulate the hardware, and emulating the PS3/360 is functionally impossible, or 3) have a streaming service do all that work for you.
Now that the consoles have moved to "This is literally a PC but with shorter bridges" we might see some more backwards compatibility in the future. But don't expect it.
also, insert "I can still play games from 1993 on my PC" pc gamer joke.

I hope game streaming takes off.

I don't think it's asking for too much at all
they could just not build their consoles with weird unique architectures and so on in the first place
but that would require giving a shit about backwards compatibility to start with, and I know they don't have any incentive to do that so eh
we'll see if emulating the PS3/xbox360 actually is impossible. I might have to wait ten years for it, but I'm sure nerds plus the march of processing power will get it done eventually
not that that really helps me, lol

Emulating the PS2 only happened recently, and it requires hardware that is functionally more powerful than the console by like a factor of ten or a hundred or something (I'm not a numbers guy).
And most people don't actually care about trying to emulate ps3/360, because:
1) They're still ubiquitous
2) So are the game titles
3) It's mathematically unreasonable
4) Half of the games are on PC anyway

i only finally got round buying a 360 when my xbox og finally packed it in and died
i figured, well they're eventually going to patch in backwards compaitibility for everything, right?
