Hi Chocula! I am a gun owner and CPL holder, among other crap. I just wanted to quickly observe that in common law there's a doctrine called "fighting words" which presupposes that sometimes you do something so extreme, but not necessarily violent, that it gives another person a legitimate reason to attack you, that was your own damned fault. Zimmerman had no right to follow Martin, and doing so was harassment and, IMO, incitement. Walk the fuck away. Shouldn't the people inside of a house, their castle, be responsible for their own defence? And it's not worth a confrontation if he was just going to steal someone's lawnmower. Even if Zimmerman shot Martin in self defence, I believe that there at least should be a crime of incitement to violence here--that Zimmerman incited Martin to attack him by harassing him.

I take possessing firearms to be a serious responsibility, and I DON'T want to follow someone with one. I don't want to see the dead body of someone I just killed over a hundred dollars or a lawnmower. I don't want to ever kill at all if it can be remotely avoided, and only the imminent threat of severe bodily harm is worth pulling the trigger. The gun is just a negotiating tool, an insurance device to get out of a dangerous situation with your life. Zimmerman was looking for a fight, and he got one. Now he gets to pay the consequences of going out and looking for that fight. Shep and Skimmer and I talked about this and though it may surprise you since we're often seen as something of a crazy gun nut conservative triumvirate on the board, we all pretty much agree on this one: Zimmerman was a I'M A JUGGALO WOOP WOOP hothead looking for a fight and that pursuit was criminally stupid, and worse, ethically unnecessary.

So what if Trayvon Martin was a pot smoking gold-toothed goon looking for some free cash for his weed? He was still a goddamned human being. He wasn't threatening the life of anyone, but Zimmerman made damned sure to make Martin feel like his life was threatened. And then he proved it was by killing him when Martin responded in a very reasonable way to a stranger following you at night.

Man starting a fight is ok
Murdering a guy if you 'lose' (special kind of lose for cowards here) is ok

But fighting back when someone starts you? DESERVE TO DIE BLACK PERSON

FBI are trained to empty their weapons, he showed more restraint. totally out of control not! probably not expecting a fight, but i guess the trial will bring some light on the whole episode. btw in Florida quote fighting words unquote are not a justification for assault.

So it's okay to respond to property theft and non-violent crime with lethal force above a certain threshold? It is morally acceptable to murder someone over a lawnmower or stereo if too many of them get snatched? If your house gets broken into, retreat to where you can protect your family and only if the person breaking and entering comes into your line of sight with a weapon when you're at that point should you open up.
