Not really "moral safety blanket" so much as it's that we're a nation of control freaks that since the 1980s have gotten it into our heads that we really are the world's police. Those damn, dirty brown people won't do what they're tol so they MUST be the "bad guys". That Iran occasionally does shit that can slightly justify that view is just icing on the cake that lets us pull the "Dem's some baaaaaaad mens" shit without choking on our own hypocrisy.
