What you need to ask Batman is how come a probe Droid can supposedly do stellar cartography but they needed to load a refrigerator sized thing implied to be scanning equipment just to search the Falcon?

I don't know about Vader needing the Force completely if he recognized it as a shield generator. Luke's X Wing was able to pick up the abundant life readings over dagobah, so scanning for structures that stick out like a sore thumb can't hurt either.
