Also, because I'm a terrible, nostalgic person I pulled Smash out of the cupboard so to speak (actually just queued it up on Spotify) and felt like it was 1995 all over again. That's a fantastic album, but man, teenage angst flashbacks.

There's a lot about it that I can agree sucks - some terrible lyrics, rotten vocals, uninspired guitar etc. But on a few of the tracks it comes together.

I usually hold artists up to theirs standard. WZRD wasn't as good as MOTMII and that was far short of MOTM. Other than a handful of features I haven't enjoyed anything from him in a while.
I sometimes wonder about artists. It seems some of them Re good for one album, story, idea, and once they're successful and have their record or publishing deal, they try to recreate that success, but they already put out their best product and the money and fame change the conditions that broughtaboutthat product.
Trap is the hot shit right now, and UZ is near the top.

I think a lot of it can also be a guy coming into his first big release with a decade of ideas and well tested content and being able to use that. Then it comes time to follow up and they have no back catalogue of ideas anymore and only 1 or 2 years to make it.

True. And in the case of rappers they out out a lot of mixtapes to test material before their first album. And also to get attention to get signed.
Some use the same formula again and it's good, sometimes it's stale, sometimes they try a new formula and it's good, sometimes it blows. C'est la vie.
Speaking if rappers it's funny how so many have better mixtapes than albums. Fabolous is a huge culprit of this. His mixtapes are amazing works, but his albums have a handful of decent tracks, or just don't measure up to the preceding mixtapes.

it is a lot of vaguely melancholic sentimental banjo-strumming

(i'll probably listen to it anyway)

new people sometimes ask me what music i listen to
i tell them i don't really listen to music because it's not really something i actually do, like i really never think to myself 'what my life needs right now is music'
