LOL, CBS' "Person of Interest" has villains who are extremists against government secrets (Snowden??? ASSANGE????), yet throws in vocab words from the Snowden whistleblowing to make the dialog cooler.

I consider it more damning that Bilbo was relegated to a supporting role, especially since Desolation of Smaug covered the parts of the book where he got the most done. At this rate, the third movie is either going to have less in common with the book than this one did, or people who didn't read the book are going to walk out of the theater wondering why the series was named after one of its minor characters.

Though I do find it hilarious that out of all of the dwarves they chose to have the superfluous love interest, they went with Kili.

Did Mad Magazine used to be funny or was it never funny? I don't find this very funny.

It's funny if you're on Duck Dynasty.

Don't I feel embarrassed about that Duck Dynasty quote I shared on fb the other day that I thought was an explanation on depression in the workplace.

That'll teach me to quote from things that I'm only vaguely aware of.

It used to be, especially when they were doing pop culture parodies.

Attempts to be topical have tended to be... problematic.

I remember that one, as well as Star Wreck: Worst Contact.

My grandmother had all of them, so when we visited there would be reading material, which helped my sense of humour a lot. She was totally rad and awesome.

I gave The Hobbit: The Excessive Bloat Must Go On a miss (the first film was just adequate; visually nice, but Jackson should've done just two slightly shorter movies instead really) and was pleasantly surprised by The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

My impression was that Dawkins was reacting more the the silly palava of politically correct industialised passive-aggressiveness than the (trivial) original incident. I confess I stop reading that stuff when the use of the word 'priviledge' exceeds once per paragraph, as it's clearly become as overstretched and stripped of meaning as 'sustainable'.

so i just took another gander at that thread (blargh) and then checked n&p and saw a utah gay marriage thread

this made me laugh out loud
How many people will recognize how helpful the Utah AG is in promoting same sex marriage if that comes to pass ?
"comes to pass"

have you guys ever read from the book of mormon? don't have to go far in it, just take a look at the first sentence of several paragraphs

http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/1

"4 For it came to pass"

"5 Wherefore it came to pass"

"6 And it came to pass"

"7 And it came to pass "

"9 And it came to pass"

you get the idea. even the missionaries joked "if you take out all the 'it came to pass' from the book of mormon you'd be left with a pamphlet"

anywho sdnetter, if that was a deliberate reference, awesome good joke mega lols

and if not it was probably the work of god

On that topic, I've finished watching the original '79 Mad Max movie. I can see how it got influential, even though if we're really honest with ourselves, it's actually pretty bad. The cinematography is clunky, the pacing is weird, and the acting is kind of wooden.

On the other hand, it kind of of got this Impressionist quality to it. Evoking things through a succession of little touches rather than showing an accurate picture... I dunno if that makes sense.

Still, am I correct in assuming that the movie took a lot from the Punk aesthetic ? Between all the leather & spikes and the "no future" vibe, I'd be surprised if it weren't the case.

Mad Max 2 is the better film and basically set the tone for all the post-apocalyptic-surviving-hereafter genre that came after it
