the only thing better than beating hawthorn with a kick after the siren is beating hawthorn with a kick from outside fifty after the siren

Awesome, I wish these games were televised more often here.

Wow.

So what's the rule on playing after the clock runs out?

Kicks like that get to take place even if the clock runs out because of the penalty/foul/whatever the hell they call it. Even if the clock runs out he still gets time to set up his kick. These non-North Americans like to keep the clock running during these things for some reason.

When you take a mark at the end of the game you're allowed to take a kick after the siren, but only a kick.

yeah

so from a mark (which Hawkins took) or a free kick, you go back on your line (which is supposed to be a straight line from where you took the mark to the goal) and it's not play on unless you deviate from that line or you take longer than 30 seconds

Only because umpires don't do their job and instead continue letting players and managers take too fucking long.

You know there's actually a rule against that and the fucking umpires (worst in any sport BTW) just ignore it?

Yup. Hence why I said what I said when I said it a few posts ago.

Hey. Those overweight pitchers take a while to get set up.

Worse than that are the number of players wearing an extra five pounds of armor when they go up to bat. Bonds used to wear that giant elbow guard and then crowd the plate like an asshole.

Explain the final score

Geelong 15 9 99
Hawthorne 14 14 98

look man i grew up on hockey and soccer

there's only one way to score, and it only counts for one point

basketball and football were confusing as hell for a while when i was growing up

i still don't quite get cricket scoring, the way it's presented at least

if the ball is kicked through the two big posts without being touched by an opponent it's a goal (6 points)

if it hits either of the two big posts, or goes between the little posts, or is handled over the line (handballed, punched, carried etc) it's a behind (one point)

hence Geelong kicked 15 goals 9 behinds and Hawthorn kicked 14 goals 14 behinds

Bartel's kick after the siren 'missed' in the sense it was a behind, but that's all we needed cause scores were level

Why play on?

Because that's the way Geelong plays!

Tragically we went down in another thriller last night. Gutted by injuries going in, Hawkins then knocked out in the first quarter, and we were battling from there. TBH, I think our form over the last month has been somewhat flattering - just don't think we've got the depth in the midfield.

Stevie Motlop though - can play: http://bigpondvideo.com/AFL/478127
