That thread is hilarious by the way. Coyote still has the sijar.net link in his sig too!
Re: Godammed SDN
Lot's of things are bullshit, but let's not pretend that was ever anything more than making the operation palatable to the public. Gaddafi was a very bad man, but so are our best pals the Saudis, but they have McDonald's so they're cool. The "national moral dilemma" here was not whether interfering would cause humanitarian side-effects, but whether it would have negative economic side-effects for us. Wouldn't want to look too much like the dictator huggers we are when it's time to negotiate new deals. I hear the French also wanted to show off how awesome and relevant their military is, so they don't become just another second-rate euro nation.Darth Fanboy wrote:Because sitting by and doing nothing while people are raped and killed wanton is the moral choice? I won't disagree that the Qaddafi-factor made it much more tantalizing for Western intervention but the idea that "no intervention ever of any kind in any situation" is bullshit.Dooey Jo wrote:oh those oil fields and gaddafi doing his own thing had nothing to do with it
no no gotta protect the wimminz and freedoms you see, imperialism is just a side-effect of that

Well that was a nice reminder why certain people should not be given any power.

TBH that was supposed to have a question mark not a period as I thought you were making a rhetorical question and I was giving a questioning answer. However, that may be because of her particular predicament where she has more things to be stressing over rather than acting like the typical SDN oldboy. If I had to be honest I rarely give her any thought, she's probably the lowest profile moderator on the board.Aaron wrote:Ahh, cause she doesn't have the usual temperament.

I dunno, I don't think everything he's saying there is completely crazy. I thought his analysis of the arena fight had potential--Jedi march in waving lightsabers expecting to win because they're Jedi and the lightsaber is a talisman of authority that wins the fight just by being there.Veef wrote:the mexican is shitting up the lightsabre thread
And then they took horrendous casulaties and had to be bailed out by the clones because the Sith have changed the game on them. I think what kinda hurts it is that we never see any of the Jedi later acting like anything went wrong on Geonosis, which doesn't fit if they expected to win easily. Even if they're not self-aware enough to let one defeat challenge their assumptions about the world, you'd think at least they'd look for excuses.

to be more specific and quietly correct the typoDooey Jo wrote:Lots of things are bullshit
There are very few situations were doing anything won't fuck someone (ie. the already disadvantaged) up. Military intervention in a civil war obviously tends to have pretty shitty results, if nothing else because of the destruction of infrastructure it inevitably brings (and there's always something else). Sanctions put pressure on the leadership only by making life more shittier for the population. Sending aid to poor nations fucks up their domestic markets. Angry letters are useless and kill trees. And so on.
So what you have to decide is not whether something is "good" because it won't be, but it might occasionally be "less bad".
But wanting to do something against suffering and injustice is of course very human, and when it comes to non-systemic disasters like earthquakes and whatnot it's a good thing (though I'm sure there are examples of profiteering off natural disasters, at least they're never actively being caused for such purposes).
So yeah, just more things to heap on the pile of "reasons why current society is not actually made for humans": makes sympathy and desire to cooperate into bad things.

Well I get all of that, which is why I did say (and I am paraphrasing) "We fucked up Afghanistan, then we fucked up Iraq even though we fucked up Afhganistan, and now we fucked up Libya* even though we fucked up Iraq."Dooey Jo wrote: There are very few situations were doing anything won't fuck someone (ie. the already disadvantaged) up. And all this talk about armed interventions...if we had waited long enough Celestial Being would have taken care of Qaddafi for us.
