So: modern theft of archaeological treasures = profound tragedy.
Theft of archaeological treasures 150 years ago = SHUT UP AND STOP WHINING, GREASY GREEKS.
Am I reading that right?
PUTTING THIS IN THE RIGHT THREAD NOW.

It's kinda true what Thanas is saying. Unpleasant but true.
I'd love to have everything returned to source but it's not viable or safe in many cases.
But man, visiting the British Museum bummed me out. Many horribly displayed pieces (literally plastered into the building walls etc.
Product of a different time, but damn.

Well, if it's viable and safe, why not? It's not like Greece can't be trusted to care for the Elgin Marbles, for instance. I can see an argument made for holding onto a piece that was from, say Afghanistan, until it had reached a point where it was reasonable to ship it back there, but for a lot of modern nations, I see no reason to refuse requests to give back antiquities. And I'd be reasonably certain that a lot of nations would be interested in a sort of time-share agreement, with, say, Greece letting the UK keep a bunch of statuary and vases in return for some old Anglo-Saxon torcs and shit like that.weemadando wrote:It's kinda true what Thanas is saying. I wish I could have gone there when I visited the UK when I was 17. I was with a big student ambassador thing, though, so I didn't have much free time in London. Even if it would have bummed me out.But man, visiting the British Museum bummed me out. Many horribly displayed pieces (literally plastered into the building walls etc.
Re: Godammed SDN
The day I went to the British Museum, not even 10 minutes into it the alarms went off and everyone had to evacuate.
Didn't have time to schedule another visit...
I should go back to London one of these days. Maybe even see a bit of the rest of the country ? I dunno what else there's to see in the UK for someone without a car or a driver's license...

i think they're talking about migration and ethnic makeups in the past where there is no evidence beyond 'hey how dark are these guys in reliefs'

I know, right ? We usually travel once or twice a year inside Europe, but these last years we didn't do it much for a number of reasons.thejester wrote:dude it's like next door to your place. europeans have no excuse not to see the rest of europe.
I hear the landscape in the Adriatic side of the country are beautiful, and since it's now part of the Schengen space, it means the borders are wide open.Akhlut wrote:Even Slovenia?

IF you want evidences one way or the other, you could always dig up some corpses in Egyptian necropoles and then play Bones on them to determine what was their "race" or whatever.starku wrote:i think they're talking about migration and ethnic makeups in the past where there is no evidence beyond 'hey how dark are these guys in reliefs'

You know how many of the states are just bullshit states, right? The Dakotas? Bullshit. Arkansas? Bullshit. Kentucky? Whiskey, horse races, and bullshit. California outside the mountains? Bullshit. There's no reason to visit most of the USA, mang.Civil War Man wrote:Most Americans have not been to every state.thejester wrote:dude it's like next door to your place. europeans have no excuse not to see the rest of europe.

People are trying to split hairs on whether or not ancient Egyptians were black people or not.adr wrote:so that african origins thread is too long and i haven't read any of it

I mean, it's not like ancient Egypt was some giant crossroads where people from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa all met up and traded and invaded and shit for thousands of years or something.

Re: Godammed SDN
Sir, I heavily disagree. In South Dakota my dad and I had a photo taken in front of four presidents after having breakfast next door to where Wild Bill Hickok was shot. In the early evening we drove through a national park which I soon recognised to be KLENDATHU, SOURCE OF THE BUG METEOR ATTACKS* and stopped the night in Wall, which has done a fabulous job of encouraging people to stop the night in what would otherwise be the middle of nowhereAkhlut wrote:You know how many of the states are just bullshit states, right? Hey, I'm sure some person has had an awesome time in Kansas, but that doesn't mean Kansas is not a bullshit state.
Also: South Dakota may just be a hair above bullshit. North Dakota, though, no. I have it on good authority from many of my friends in Minnesota that ND is not a place for humans.

Well is true
I am a man of broken aspirations, so I daresay I could travel anywhere and enjoy it
A place where Dr Pepper is $0.99 for 20oz is a bonus

Is dr pepper really the answer you need
Re: Godammed SDN
Your fiscal senses are shit. If you really need a Pepper, just buy a chilled 2L from the fridge section of the gas station; you'll get a shitload more for, at most, about another $0.80-$1 more. Or, you could go to an actual retail store and get a 2L for $0.25 more.timmy wrote:A place where Dr Pepper is $0.99 for 20oz is a bonus

Re: Godammed SDN
so in our me3 thread i mentioned nerds were whining because the prothean's voice isn't normal enough since he has a west african accent, and now after months of ads the nerds at sdn have caught onto his existence and voice
then promptly complained about him having a dumb accent
