It's purpose it to dehumanize and humiliate the people being booked. Going through a sensitive metal detector should be adequate enough to find most dangerous things and a drug-sniffing dog should get the rest of the contraband.

You could always just accept the fact that it's impossible to completely foolproof security and that some contraband will inevitably get through no matter how invasive you make your searches.
