Re: Godammed SDN
the biggest bullshit is the means testing on welfare
so say you're like my parents and just never worked at all (thx social security disability)
you can get food stamps and rent and heat subsidies and state medical insurance and meager cash handouts
and you have a lot of time available
if you play your cards right (one of which is to say no to the overpriced luxury that is junk food), that's the good life, lots of family time, you'll be fine on food etc
but now suppose you have some kind of exploitation by the bourgeoisie (regular people call this a "job" or even more laughably, "gainful employment" yeah gainful for the bosses maybe)
anyway suppose you work liek the 40 hour (god i envy france) standard work week
at like minimum wage
so now this often puts you above some of the welfare limits! so now you don't get the subsidies or the cash
can prolly still get some food stamps and maybe, maybe medicaid though i hear this differs by state and you often lose it if the "job" offers death panels that take your money and don't give anything back (aka "private health insuance"); if you can get it through the employer, you can't take the government one
because the private health lobbiests know full well that if they had to compete fairly with the government plans, they'd get their worthless vampiric asses handed to them
anyway but they cut off some of it
now your money all is tied up in rent and heat etc
so you should cut back on a lot
and this is usually possible if you have the proper education and stuff
but a lot of people lack that (by no fault of their own btw)
so now they take a second job
now working like 12 hours a day
and then the fucking food stamps get cut b/c of the higher income
and if you have children, oh jesus, that's running on a cash treadmill cuz now you have to pay someone to take care of them, meaning the work is even less gainful
you might net like $1.50 / hour i'm not even kidding
anyway the more you work, the less the marginal gain is because of the means testing cutting of the welfare
and then you have the massive lack of time
which makes it a royal pain to get ahead and you're just too fucking tired to cook, despite it being cheaper... thus again hurting the net gain of the work
and the option of just getting off that fucking treadmill and not working might be an option financially and legally (the best one overall i say), but then society calls you a lazy hat or whatever so many ppl don't see that as acceptable
a lot of shit needs to change
if you ask me the welfare programs are generous enough, we got by fine (never had a car either btw, location location location)
but the problem is the welfare cuts off as you work more meaning more work = small net gain, where it should be the opposite
my solution is a citizen's wage guaranteed income
throw the welfare money at everybody regardless of means
if they don't work, give it to them
if they work a shitty minimum wage job, give it to them the same. the job now means they actually get ahead
and even if they are a rich wall street banker, give it to them cuz it would be more hassle to have a test to exclude them than to just include everybody. let the IRS get it back if appropriate
with this, there's no welfare application process to scare people away (and a lot of people don't even realize these subsidy programs exist!)
there's no social stigma to receiving the money
and it solves the working poor gap.
hell it'd even act like demand side keyensian stimulus for the economy
i'm pretty sure eveybody would win
but ohes noes teh lazy welfare queens need to be PUNISHED not encouraged
wtf lol bbq

Re: Godammed SDN
In France full-time employment is 35 hours a week. If your employer wants you to work more than that he has to pay your hours at, like, double-rate IIRC. And then he can't have you work for more than 10 or 11 hours a day, and must leave you at least one work-free day per week.adr wrote:anyway suppose you work liek the 40 hour (god i envy france) standard work week
No.
Re: Godammed SDN
thats pretty much au except i think it's 38-40 depending on industry here, but salaried workers as opposed to per-hour guys dont' get that protection
Re: Godammed SDN
it's considered fulltime at 35 in the US tooOxymoron wrote:In France full-time employment is 35 hours a week. but the thing is, employers like to skirt that rule
in order to get the most labor for paying the least benefits, they'll work you at 34 hours a week and still classify you part-time
Re: Godammed SDN
This is also pretty common around here too, sadly.
That's what you get when the general attitude about workers unions is "Fuck Those Guys", I guess ?

yah but you don't get the overtime until it is over 40Zod wrote:it's considered fulltime at 35 in the US too
at least not in my experience anyway

depends on your stateadr wrote:yah but you don't get the overtime until it is over 40Zod wrote:it's considered fulltime at 35 in the US too

most states it's over 40 hours in a week
but in places like california it's more than 8 hours in a day, whether you've worked a full 40 yet or not

What the fuck does that even mean
No.
Re: Godammed SDN
it means the army destroyed workers rights in the 20s
so now us industrial relations is a bizarre and contradictory mess of garbage
seriously go read abuot the early union movements and the definition of 'permanent' employment and the protections workers recieve against their employers
it's both byzantine and absurd

Re: Godammed SDN
right to work means an employer can fire you at any time for any reason and that unions are neutered by the law
it means THE EXACT OPPOSITE of what you'd think it means

while at will means you can be fired at any time for no reason
totally different
totally different
Re: Godammed SDN
Tell him how because a guy int 1870 argued that employment wih no fixed term has no agreed end date there is nothing stopping you getting fired whenever that now 'permanent' employment can be less secure the contract employment
I mean oxy imagine a world where you'd be insane for even saying the words 'wrongful dismissal'

Re: Godammed SDN
While yes, LVM labels & partition UUID/labels do fix the problem but you need to actually use them to fix it. Mounting a partition via /dev/foo isn't going to help. linkyphongn wrote:Don't most distributions use a partition UUID now instead of /dev/foo? That would ameliorate that problem.xon wrote:If you actually understand that the "/dev/sdx" he is talking about is an alias generated by a driver which then talks to the USB stack, it's fairly trivial to construct a situation where having two USB devices with the same serial number and thus being indistinguishable to the USB stack could go wrong.
Directly using /dev/hd*# or /dev/sd*# is no longer preferred since these device assignments can change between system boots:
