Ah I remember colony wars.

IIRC the people behind it went on to do the SW Starfighter games which were actually pretty fun.

I was so happy when I finally got the good ending for CW: Vengeance. I started jumping up and down and pumping my fist and everything.

Which was probably really immature because it happened last year........

Man I hated that level. That one and the goddamn sullust one with all the missile launchers.

Though I question calling the original Rogue Squadron a "space sim," since it didn't have any levels set in space.

There was a Death Star level in there somewhere

and most of the guiding principles are the same

a lot of those space games were generally based on a ground combat engine or the opposite

see the transition from space to ground combat in those Colony Wars vids

What I don't get is why they never got Mark Hamil to do luke's voice. I mean, doesn't he make most of his living as a voice actor these days? They keep using this one guy who maybe sounds like luke if he had a really bad nasal infection or something.

On Rogue Squadron, what did you think was the hardest level veef? I thought it was Sullust, which I actually didn't beat without the unlimited lives cheat until 2008

I think maybe Mark Hamill wasn't into reprising his role anymore for fear of typecasting. Or perhaps he asked for too much money or some contractual thing with whoever represents him.

Yeah I think Sullust was the hardest. I used to use any excuse to fly the A-wing because it's my favorite even though it kinda sucks in these games with only two pew pews

I recall just giving up and using the level skip cheats eventually.

Remember when any game let you fly the Millennium Falcon as a hidden ship made that game the best ever :3

From what i've seen, people tend to rate either sullust or Fest as the most controller-chuckingly hard level in the game. And I do remember the Falcon cheat code. It was cool, but the Falcon wasn't really that much more useful than the standard X-wing.

The original Rogue Squadron hasn't really held up that well over the years. A lot of early 3d games haven't sadly. The sequels are a little better though.

I think some games like Star Fox 64 have aged pretty well. Then again those games were more open about their arcade-y nature unlike most space sims and also had a solid rail shooter base.

so I pulled up a video of Sullust because it's been a while

this is just hard because it's a lot of ground defenses and missile turrets you have no real effective countermeasure for in your slow ass spaceship

that's the worst kind of hard

you know real airplanes tend to engage ground defenses in situations that favor them over the fixed emplacements

not slow down so your stupid pew pews can hit them as easily as they can hit you :v

here's some X-wing

a part of me is thinking back to my youth of playing these games but now I can't help but recall the repetitiveness of the combat

Man. Did the original X-wing really look that bad?

My memories of playing it are a little foggy because I mostly played the remake with the XvT engine.

yeah the original X-wing was a DOS game that came on multiple 3.5 inch floppies

had to be pretty basic for a 286 or 386 processor running DOS

fucking feeeeeeeest :argh:

those videos are giving me anxiety disorders

especially when you're hunting for medals, and you've been playing super awesome the whole time, and then it's like "heeeere's your NO MEDAL because you missed five shots"

but i got a silver medal on fest when i finally managed to beat it and fuck it that's good enough

ps the original x-wing ruined my eyesight :failure:

It wouldn't be half as bad if it wasn't for all that fog. Some levels hid it well, most didn't.

Some N64 games had really bad fog effects.

I rented this Superman game once that was just terrible.
