Yep. I was 18 at the time.
How the hell did you live for 18 years without seeing a single Star Wars movie?

I'm not being an ass. I really just can't conceive of such a thing. It would be like some college kid having never heard of Superman or Mickey Mouse or Nike. Just...whoa.

I know plenty of people who've never seen any star wars, or who have only seen one movie, or only the prequels

Will they?

Family Guy is just a bunch of references to my generations childhood. SW for better or worse helped setup the blockbuster and crosses generations in popularity.

well since they're not endlessly recyclign the movies on free tv anymore like they did in the 80s

how long you think that'll last :v

cultural objects remain such long after they're irrelevant until everyone infected dies
this is why lucas is a genius

i thought Lucas was a genius because he got in on the merchandising before everyone realised how big that shit would become
the star wars films are good kid's films, if a bit dated

He was lucky enough to pitch a product that people thought would bomb, so they let him keep the rights. That's it really, lots of stuff in the OT was the result of other people's work.

Wasn't star wars one of the films that really kicked off merchandising as a thing worth paying attention to, though?

It's pretty clear that star wars isn't even central to internet nerds any more, hells even star wars fansites like SDN seem to focus on warhammer 40k more than star wars.

Because I rarely watched movies and never knew about it?

You talking about that "why working class people vote conservative" thread?

Yeah, I was wanting to vent/lol here about how predictable the ppl over there are

Cause the instant I saw that thread I thought to myself not sure I agree completely but interesting thesis, would be interesting to see a thoughtful discussion of it ... pity here in the intellectual crucible I'm sure the reaction will be wagon-circling about how it must be wrong and terrible and republitard propaganda because it says something critical about the political wing they like (besides basically just "they need to be more hard-core left").

And I come back the next day and, sure enough, the discussion seems to be mostly a derail about flag-burning, Sidewinder generally being a spaz, and talking about whether it's right wing propaganda or not.

I'm more inclined to treat critical pieces seriously if they aren't laden with buzzwords.
