wow i hate linux

i decided to play a quick game of starcraft. haven't done that for a while. but i updated my wine last week (wine lets you run some windows programs on linux. often poorly.)

and SURPRISE something broke. sound doesn't work. the game sucks without sound

and apparently the only way to fix it is to lose my config files and move all my emulated hard drive stuff. god damn it all

Wasn't either Halo or Halo 2 a fucking nightmare to get working on PC?

Halo 2. I've had the 1 on pc almost since the release of the pc version, and i've never had any problem with it that wasn't related to my pc being a piece of shit by the standards of that time.

Never played halo 2, be it on pc or xbox.

Fucking MySQL. Broken by design, and non-trivial to actually fix (changing the character type causes wierdness which would require a dump & reload at best just plain not working at worse)

idk but probably. it's worked on the linux thing for a long time and if those yahoos can get it right i'm sure win7 can too

might as well just try it and see what happens anyway

my win 7 computer doesn't have a cd drive so i can't....

i have the game (and even use an iso on linux, so much more convenient than digging the cd out)

but i tried demontools for worms 2 and it didn't work. i hear the real cd does work though so maybe it introduces its own problems

i don't really know

oh well. speaking of isos though i also ripped some of my playstation games and play them on an emulator. again just so much more convenient than getting out the real things and sometimes it helps the load times

(strangely it doesn't consistently help load times. i think the games have some delays like hard coded or something and even if it loads faster it runs through the screens. ugh)

however i do prefer doing the real thing anyway on a playstation + tv. with computer games i prefer the iso method over the cd like 100%. computer cd drives spinning up annoys me

idk, it works when i copy it to another cd or use the iso on linux

maybe win7 is to blame, maybe it is daemontools, maybe my install is just busted (when i try to install fresh it coes "couldn't run setup" so i copied the files from another computer)

i really just don't know

It's weird because emoji works on SDN, which is the only other board I post on.

Thinking back, I think they've worked on NT before, but I don't know which iteration.

MySQL's limitations are wierd, arbitrary and make zero sense.

And will randomly change between versions.

Drove home from work in one of those moods where I'd kill myself if not for the people depending on me

The thing I hate about this job is a shifting target, but at the core is the concept that in customer service you've got to just stand there and take it when they fly off the handle at you for something someone else did. Different personality types take this better or worse - either they shrug it off, or they then take it out on people that they have the power over. But I take it all personally, like I'm expecting them to bring up that I didn't finish uni, make no money, and have more kids than I can really afford. And I think it's slowly but surely killing me.

That's going to sound really dumb, but have you thought about seeking an alternative career path which has less chances of nurturing suicidal tendencies ?
No.
