In Equestria's Dark Ages it was basically

unicorn ponies (can do pretty much anything with their magic) --> pegasus ponies(can fly and manipulate clouds) --> earth ponies (manual labour)

It's easy to image there being some resentment.

Also, the Equestrian Aristocracy seems to be 100% Unicorns

while every farmers depicted in the show thus far are Earth Ponies
