I've always wanted to visit Australia but recently I've had the feeling that I want to visit it even more than usual. I'd especially like to go to Melbourne to see some (online) friends of mine, and to visit Darwin because outside of Kuala Lumpur it has the nicest climate that I'm drawn to. But I don't think I'm going to get the chance for at least a couple more years. And that makes me sad.

I wish I had the money to travel. There are so many things i'd like to see, but there just isn't any time or money for it anymore. I should have done it after high school, my dad and I talked about traveling over the summers, but I just didn't do it and the opportunity slipped away.

Now with rising fuel costs and my father getting too old to travel, i'll probably never get the opportunity. I think when I die that will be one of my biggest regrets, that I never saw more of the world outside of news stories.

If you can get a job that lets you travel, do it. One of the things I absolutely love about my job is that I get to travel all over the country in (relative) comfort, largely on my employers' dime. It makes some weeks absolutely worthwhile.

Believe me, if I had the disposable income I would. I'm reasonably certain I can afford it next year, depending on where I'm working and how much I'm willing to save for it.

OK, I just read the Darth Mencken thread. http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewtopic. ... &start=125

What the heck?

EDIT: Also, is Mr. Friendly Guy here? I'd like to have an adult discussion re: NBC rhetoric and the concepts of proportional response without the sideshow.

Huh.

My step brother just referred to his "I'M A JUGGALO WOOP WOOP step brother" on facebook. Amusingly, it was clearly meant for private conversation, but he misclicked or something.

I put a post in afterwards, basically functioning as an "I saw that".

I await his next move.

Aaron, well, if he's not here, and you're interested, would you like to have the conversation?

For the most part, I have no concern with anything NK has done, beyond a certain - mild - concern that it would be easier for them to toss a missile at LA than at DC. Those concerns are usually addressed by the fact that San Francisco is even easier.

Regarding the rhetoric (and I want to be clear, the only problem I have is with the rhetoric, if Outer Lower Inner Treeland wants to develop nukes, has the money, and has the technology, I see no problem with it, at least until one goes off in an offensive manner), the issue I have would simply be that there is a world of difference between adopting a nuclear first strike policy over economic sanctions and one of adopting the same policy over armed conflict.

Since defending against an attack involves planning on attackers being effective, any remotely responsible nuclear power will study first strike concepts along with all other uses of power, simply because you don't ever plan on your opponent being stupid, either on a sports field or in war. In order to plan on your opponent being smart, though, you need to know what smart looks like, and that takes practice. Adopting a policy of first strike is a much larger step, and conflating the study of tactics with what seems to be a policy level decision is, at best, an intellectual shortcut that borders on trolling. The flip side is that I'm relatively sure that the US did have a stated policy of first strike at one point, but I'm having a really hard time finding the signal (policy statements) among the noise (everything from contemporary journal articles to HPCA). I am 100% sure, on the other hand that that first strike policy had absolutely nothing to do with economic warfare.

I pretty much agree. Economic warfare though, are you referring to sanctions?

Why do you care about what some random screwhead on the internet say about you ?

You know full well you're not going to get any productive discussion out of him.

He's just an idiot. I want everyone to see what a harassing asshole he is. That likely won't happen since his rhetoric is what they all enjoy. "Pull your panties up, bitch."
