The Testing Chat III: The Time of Great Chatting

Ando and I were discussing that phenomenon last night. I quoted something from Animal House and he confessed that he had never actually seen it but recognised the quote all the same. I ventured that he would have practically seen the whole movie through various affectionate parodies.

Then again, nerds. I felt the same way about knowing what the number 42 meant to Douglas Adams afficionados; nerds are relentless in trying to spread what they love. Combination of facebook and youtube has made this easier than ever.

before seeing that scene again i remembered it as the peasant being completely silly and overreacting, so "help i'm being oppressed" brought up that flawed memory of the scene and would mean the speaker was complaining about nothing.

of course he was being somewhat silly, that's part of the comedy, but what i didn't remember was that his objection was actually well grounded.

When much of the comedic value is derived from the absurdity of the material, it shouldn't be surprising that coming into it having heard all of the material in advance dulls the enjoyment.

so i just received my first paycheck of 2013. a sweet $800 (before taxes). next one coming.... eventually. maybe. great.

i guess on the bright side i might be able to get out of paying my estimated income and payroll taxes next month! gotta talk to the accountant, ugh... but at this rate i kinda have to.

anywho so a handful of scenes in my sci fi world involve some of the characters going to one of the ridiculously rich parts of the world and oohing and aahing a little over the huge buildings, outside and inside

like have oyu ever seen westminster abbey on the tv? the thing is enormous, you go inside and there's fucking trees growing in this building and they don't get anywhere close to the ceiling. when i watched the royal wedding i just couldn't get over the size and majesty of that place

on i think 60 minutes a couple weeks ago they were showing another huge church in spain and it was built to be like a forest, huge, tall, amazing detail. incredible architecture

fantastic buildings and i transfer some of my own amazement onto the characters


BUT they live inside a fucking man (and woman) made space habitat! 20 miles long, 6 miles wide, when you look at the sky in there you can see opposite strips of land and flying rivers with islands in the sky. those mountains over there? man made.

so i ask myself: would they share my amazement at seeing a huge church or fancy mansion? and i think the answer is yes. you see the world they live in might be an amazing feat of human capabilities.... but to them it is just the world, it is something they see every day and probably barely think about at all. the fancy building is a new experience. this isn't a wholly rational analysis of engineering, it is a visceral "wow" brought on by the art of it all

moreover, i wonder if the amazingness of something is on like a laffer curve (lol). so something small isn't that impressive cuz like dude, it is small. then you get into the "wow" area.... but then you get so big that it can't be like all in sight anymore, and instead of perceiving it as an enormous object to focus upon, it becomes more like idk just a background. though not being able to see the end of something is pretty amazing too so this isn't perfect

i dont really know the familiarity with the daily view vs the new experience is solid enough reason for them to be just as amazed as me

Well, I know that when you where on the level "The Silent Cartographer" from the original Halo, you could see rising above the horizon the curvature of the Halo, going up and up and far away into the sky.

And then your eyes rose up, at the vertical, and far away you could see the other side of the Halo, all tiny and yet you knew it was fucking huge.

Facing that, your first thoughts weren't "wow that's beautiful" as much as "Well, I think we're not in Kansas anymore Toto...".

Point is, I think any kind of amazement would come more from seeing something radically different from what they know than just a question of scale.

I love Monty Python. I love the movie. That love can be suitably expressed without pointlessly re-quoting every scene at every available opportunity until the original intent is lost and the only humour value remaining is that it's become an empty pop/geek-culture reference.
