Re: Testing Chat IV: A New Hope
Picture of Sailor Galaxia from the fifth Sailor Moon artbook. I figured I might as well follow King adr's lead, and my first av here was Sailor Aluminum Siren, I'm pretty sure.
Re: Testing Chat IV: A New Hope
Who did the art? It looks like something from Final Fantasy, with the background.
Also, learn something new every day Re: Romans and the Bible. Not very surprising, I suppose. Revelations wasn't something my 1st/2nd/3rd grade classes went over in Christian school.

Dear god, is the belief that one should lie in interviews really that prevalent, or is it just nerd arrogance?

It's pretty prevalent here in suburbia, or at least lying on resumes and being evasive in interviews is.Questor wrote:Dear god, is the belief that one should lie in interviews really that prevalent, or is it just nerd arrogance?
Re: Testing Chat IV: A New Hope
I've never seen or heard anyone say to directly lie on a resume. I have heard of course that you're supposed to be selling yourself, so I suppose being evasive in interviews might count.Bakustra wrote:It's pretty prevalent here in suburbia, or at least lying on resumes and being evasive in interviews is.Questor wrote:Dear god, is the belief that one should lie in interviews really that prevalent, or is it just nerd arrogance?
Worst I've heard is that if you left a job under bad circumstances, just leave it off. Lie by omission, I suppose. But that's different, I'd think, than say claiming qualifications or experience you don't have.
Questor, what's the context of this, BTW?
Re: Testing Chat IV: A New Hope
That's actually understood. You're trading what looks like a period of unemployment for a job you hope they don't find out about. That's why any period of unemployment is going to be treated with suspicion (as idiotic as that is in this economy).RogueIce wrote:Worst I've heard is that if you left a job under bad circumstances, just leave it off. What I'm talking about is the idiotic people saying "massage your resume" and crap like that. Things like making up a new title for yourself or drastically overstating achievements and qualifications. The one that's most common is "try to insert management and leadership roles in everything," and "Embellish and enhance everything, and paper it over with good interview skills."
Several family issues which crystalized with JME's latest unemployment posts. A couple members of my family insist on applying to jobs that they are completely unqualified for with resumes that are... "based on a true story" shall we say.Questor, what's the context of this, BTW?
Re: Testing Chat IV: A New Hope
On another note, I bet Carinthium's EdPsych report makes for some interesting reading.
Although I do have to admit that I've become rather skeptical of all the people on the internet who claim to have Asperger's or HFA. So many of them are self-diagnosed, or even fad-diagnosed by non-specialists for some very obscure reasons. I am actually starting to think this fad is worse than the ADHD fad.
At a layman's guess, based on his posting history and my own limited experience, I'd guess Carinthium's for real, but that he prevaricates on the meanings of words rather than larger concepts. If so, he is literally incapable of understanding the concepts that are being discussed. For him, words aren't shared conceptual symbols but hard facts.

It's pretty sad that 90% of the activity on SDN these days are idiots trying to show how smart they are by arguing with an obvious troll.
Re: Testing Chat IV: A New Hope
In my own defense, I'm bored, can't sleep because I'm on a new schedule at work, and have finished all of my assignments.

I know, I just feel so unclean any time I post over there. I manage to leave for weeks at a time, then something will happen and I'll think, "It's 1:33 am on a weekend, nothing is happening, I wonder what they're saying about X."Flagg wrote:Wasn't really talking about you.Questor wrote:In my own defense, I'm bored, can't sleep because I'm on a new schedule at work, and have finished all of my assignments.
I swear, the only reason I still go there is boredom and the fact that I don't give enough of a shit to sign up with another community.
EDIT: My alert on fractal's thread also pinged...

If by "massage your resume" you mean present things in a positive light then you're okay. If you mean the later bit where you make something up, well, that's a fast track to get fired.Questor wrote:What I'm talking about is the idiotic people saying "massage your resume" and crap like that. During my prolonged unemployment my mom's philosophy was not unlike this. "APPLY FOR EVERYTHING! JUST GET YOUR FOOT IN THE DOOR! GO TO THE OFFICE AND APPLY IN PERSON!" She just didn't get that that wasn't going to help. Applying for everything was just going to piss off the HR department or have the hiring manager very quickly wonder why I'm wasting his time and going to the office of wherever I was applying was only going to get me turned away by security and achieve nothing save to waste gas money.A couple members of my family insist on applying to jobs that they are completely unqualified forwith resumes that are... "based on a true story" shall we say.
To make matters worse, her friends at work insisted that's how you get hired and so she wouldn't listen to me. Lots of fights about that...
Re: Testing Chat IV: A New Hope
i saw this yesterday about interviews:
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/20/busin ... ted=1&_r=1
guy from google says that their interviews along with other info like GPA was basically useless in determining who would be a good employee

Re: Testing Chat IV: A New Hope
Holy shit, I just read up on the Penny Arcade dickwolves controversy. I was friends with those dudes before they became big, I never knew they were such assholes.
Re: Testing Chat IV: A New Hope
It's complicated, but basically it revolves around a bad rape joke and their horrid reaction to legitimate criticism of it, including sarcastically supporting rape culture.
Re: Testing Chat IV: A New Hope
They... White-knighted the guy who made the "it'll be over soon" joke at E3 ?
... Well... As people making a livelihood making more or less tasteful joke, I guess I can understand such a reaction ?

No.
Re: Testing Chat IV: A New Hope
No, they made a strip where there was a dumb rape joke and some rape survivors took issue with it and instead of doing the right thing, or even the less wrong thing, they went into full on Jub mode.Oxymoron wrote:They... White-knighted the guy who made the "it'll be over soon" joke at E3 ?

Re: Testing Chat IV: A New Hope
The original comic pointed out how players don't really give a shit about whatever the game's narrative is telling them to give a shit about, and how they just want to get to the end and get their reward and move on. I didn't find the actual comic that bad, but when that controversy got off the ground and the PA dickheads started defending themselves in truly bizarre ways, I decided PA was a shitty comic run by shitty people.
The other thing is that PA hasn't been funny in years really and it still amazes me they're considered big shots in the gaming industry.

Re: Testing Chat IV: A New Hope
Yeah I stopped reading it back in 2006 because it didn't amuse me anymore. I was in on it really early and was email friends with Mike (Tycho). They do a lot of good work and this just caught me really off guard. I can see where they are coming from, and the joke wasn't all that bad, but like you said the reaction was fucking bizarre. And really offensive.Stofsk wrote:The original comic pointed out how players don't really give a shit about whatever the game's narrative is telling them to give a shit about, and how they just want to get to the end and get their reward and move on. So, SDN.
I've kind of been procrastino-lurking there a bit these last few days, and I've seen a few interesting discussions in the Science-Fiction forum. Kind of want to participate in the discussions, but I've also kind of vowed to myself I wouldn't post there anymore.
Oh well.

testing: He's slamming SDN! He's slamming SDN!
lol.
OK, SDN is very likely one of the communities he's talking about.
