I've completely stopped using words ever since taking an online telepathy course
Now he belongs wholly to Pearson PLC and Bertelsmann.Oxymoron wrote:Tom Clancy is dead.
Happened yesterday apparently.

I will admit to using lol as an interjection when speaking verbally.
Although most of the times it is used on a sarcastic tone.

No.
Re: Testing Chat V: The Final Mysterious Island: Miami Beach
There seems to be this idea that it's superior rationality to ignore motivational context. That treating a statement rationally means treating it as if it came out of a disinterested computer, and not a human being with human motivations and a probable interest in persuading people to believe certain things.
Unsurprisingly, it often seems to be used in defending the idea that things terrible people say should be taken seriously.
I wouldn't be surprised if there were once people whose minds worked in such a "rational" way - and they didn't leave any descendants because they got horribly exploited by people who were good at sophistry.

So Tom Clancy.
I actually enjoyed his nonfiction stuff (Carrier, Marine, Air Wing, etc). Informative and a pleasant read.

Remind me Rogue, you were Navy, right ?
Or did I get the the "ex-military" bit completely wrong ?
Also I didn't know Clancy had done non-fiction stuff. What about it ?

Re: Testing Chat V: The Final Mysterious Island: Miami Beach
You must have me confused with Lonestar. Which happened surprisingly often back when he was still active on SDN.
Re: Testing Chat V: The Final Mysterious Island: Miami Beach
Welp. Sorry about that, then. In that case may I ask what's you occupation / background ? For my files. *creepy reflection on non-existing glasses*
Anyway, Tom Clancy non-fiction stuff... what was it about ?

I occasionally use it as an enhancing prefix. i.e. lolbulbs (to refer to ridiculously over-engineered lightbulbs that operate for tens of thousands of years)Oxymoron wrote:I will admit to using lol as an interjection when speaking verbally.

Re: Testing Chat V: The Final Mysterious Island: Miami Beach
Well when you put it that way... I'm a super genius high school student (I built a flying VW, for instance) who fights evil space aliens once every week or so.Oxymoron wrote:Welp. Military stuff, obviously.Oxymoron wrote:Anyway, Tom Clancy non-fiction stuff... what was it about ?
AMERICAN military, of course, because none of the others matter.
More seriously, the answer is in the titles. "Carrier: A Guided Tour of an Aircraft Carrier", "Marine: A Guided Tour of a Marine Expeditionary Unit" and so on. Wikipedia, of course, has a list.
Re: Testing Chat V: The Final Mysterious Island: Miami Beach
I'm going to lobby Anders to play some Clancyverse tonight. Vegas 2 for pref. Vale Clancy.
My former 2IC was much the same. 'Roffle' and 'La-mayo' too, for that matter.Infinity Biscuit wrote:I'm starting to use "lol" about once every three sentences

Edit: though his non-fiction stuff, I thought, was pretty good. So were some of the video games published under his name.

Posts per day over at the Something Awful forums. I'd have gone further back but the post numbering changed somewhere in February 2002 and I didn't feel like sorting it out.

That's a pretty brutal decline. I wonder if it'll revive with the release of the new movie.>:3 wrote:Today marks the end of the first quarter of SDN's 12th year of operation. Time to update the posts per day count for the three quarters since the last time I did this.

Wonder why SB took off so suddenly.
Also, you can see where SomethingAwful closed down three forums at once haha.

OH! You're referring to LF and YCS and BYOB.
I think the 06->07 decline might be when the torrent forums got closed.

Something Awful used to have a whole file-sharing subsection before Lowtax wised up and shut it down.

Yeah, that was way before my time, I only started reading SA when you (or somebody) linked a story thread on SDN. And I think that the closing of Helldump is also visible as a dip around July 09.
