At least where I live, there isn't really a term that specifies the gender of the victim. Generally, bitch is used when a woman is being shitty, regardless of whether she is being shitty to a man or a woman, while men being shitty has terms like asshole, dickhead, or motherfucker.

That's actually another nice way to come at it. Look at how, if you actually dig deep, empowered women who do great things or fight against oppression have been around as long as said oppression existed, but they're systematically covered up, often inadvertently due to people's misogynistic blind spots. Absence of evidence of women's actions has been shown to not be evidence for their lack of existence but for the patriarchy being even shittier

then apply it to language

I actually ran into something like this recently. I caught Hell's Angels (the old Howard Hughes WWI epic) on Netflix, and found it was actually more mature than I was expecting for a movie made in 1930. Then, once I turned over that rock, I started reading up on pre-code Hollywood and found that it was actually relatively progressive on topics like race, gender, and sexuality before the MPPC and the Legion of Decency poisoned the well. Which was actually fairly surprising, since for all the "Liberal Hollywood" talk, I've always viewed Hollywood as being several years behind the general population in terms of progressiveness.

I'm not like a linguist or anything, but a friend of mine will sometimes say 'if L'Académie française is at odds with French speakers, L'Académie française is wrong'.

I expect most elites throughout history would disagree with that and say that obv the way quality people talk is the proper language and the way people on the street talk is inferior and degenerate and their incorrect language is a sign of their debased crude culture. You still see plenty of this kind of attitude toward AAVE, slang etc..

To the extent that people lower on the totem pole buy into this and seek to partake of the "refined" culture of those above them that would be one mechanism for language to tend to follow the forms of the more priviliged. Another one is that social interaction tends to happen on the terms of the priviliged so it's more important for the non-priviliged to be able to talk to them in their own terms than visa versa.

I expect realistically it's usually a mixture of both: language both trickles down from the top and bubbles up from the street.

I could buy that. The push for women's rights in particular was similar in the 20s and the 60s, and in some cases it feels like those 60s movements picked up where the 20s left off.

I did get a kick out of reading about the Legion of Decency, though, particularly since both of my parents were raised Catholic during that time, so they knew first-hand the kind of influence it wielded in their communities. The list of movies that received their Condemned rating is especially comical/sad. Some of them you could easily see the rationale behind them, like A Clockwork Orange or Rosemary's Baby. Others were condemned, but not for the reasons you'd expect (Psycho was apparently condemned because it had a flushing toilet rather than, you know, the grisly murder). Then there were several items on the list that caused a double-take, like The Odd Couple or Miracle of 34th Street.

It gets funnier when you compare them to what wasn't condemned. From Russia With Love was condemned, but not any of the other Bond movies. Spartacus was condemned, but not Lolita. The Producers was condemned, but not The Godfather.

It goes over the stifling pre-mid 1960s censorship, but it's mainly about the current heavily corporate controlled MPAA (and also goes over the immense PR clout of the US Military, which explains the largely wanky, overly favourable depiction of America's armed forces in a lot of Hollywood movies).

OK, I think the more propagandist, toned down, and simplified Western mass media of the 1930s/1940s/1950s did a lot to warp and damage the perceptions of modern people's take on history and politics. Mass media is very powerful and Hollywood movies from the 1930s/1940s/1950s are the most accessible images of that mid 20th century era, greatly warping our perceptions of it.

Especially when WWII was turned into a gigantic PR coup through the Disnified media of that era for America and Britain, two not especially nice nation states that were fighting the unambiguously brutal Nazi German regime that made them look like boy scouts even before the media manipulation (despite Herr Thanas going on and on and on about the misdeeds of America and Britain being fucking tedious three years ago).

See Molière's "Le Bourgeois Gentillhomme", where the titular bourgeois Mr Jourdain, wishing to acquire status at the King's court, want to blends in with the Aristocrats, and among some of his (comically unsuccessful) attempts at doing so tries to learn how to speak like the elite he wishes to join.

By the way, most of Molière's works are a treasure trove of resources when talking about that kind of stuff.

I don't know how it stands the translation to English, though, given it's the French equivalent of Shakespeare (though almost all of his works are comedy).

i have two copies, i actually decided to go with the blu ray. not sure if it is the director's edition or what, it was part of a pack of all the kirk movies i bought on disc a lil while back.

i also have it on VHS, which is the special longer edition. i didn't actually go with it just cuz the vcr is in the other room and i wanted to sit on the computer while watching lol


but you know this film is kinda gripping me. unlike the other ST movies, i haven't seen this for a really long time.... so i actually don't even know what is going to happen next. and i enjoy me some star trek porn and the soundtrack so even the long "boring" scenes are fun in their own way
