Call him a hypocrite if you want (frankly, this isn't an argument I care to have), but it is documented fact that he publically spoke out against plural marriage.Kryten wrote: Given Smith himself married a 14-year-old girl, I somehow doubt that.

While he was marrying people left right and sideways, including his friends' wives, receiving revelation that his first wife could sleep around, and telling people in no uncertain terms that the only way to receive exaltation was through Plural Marriage. Indeed, all references to 'Celestial Marriage' until the Twentieth Century were explicitly, and only, about the covenant of Plural Marriage. The secrecy he used at the time can also be tied pretty explicitly to his growing interest in Masonry and the rise of the Temple's significance as a religious institution and insular site for worship in Nauvoo.adr wrote:Call him a hypocrite if you want (frankly, this isn't an argument I care to have), but it is documented fact that he publically spoke out against plural marriage.Kryten wrote: Given Smith himself married a 14-year-old girl, I somehow doubt that.
If you're interested in this you should read Nauvoo Polygamy by George Smith, which is the only real in-depth study on the time period from what I remember. Very meticulously sourced and well-done.

I'm familiar with the overview of what you just said, but (more aimed at Flagg and such than you) I don't particularly care beyond an academic fascination: for sake of argument, suppose Joseph Smith (or even Jesus Christ for that matter!) was an outright child rapist or whatever nasty stuff anyone wants to say. It doesn't change who I am, or what I believe to be right and wrong, nor the decency of the people I've come to know in the church.Straha wrote:If you're interested in this you should read Nauvoo Polygamy by George Smith, which is the only real in-depth study on the time period from what I remember. Flagg, why did you give up on your post-testingstan site? I bet people are ready to jump ship now more than ever.

Don't forget how Smith himself was a martyr despite firing into a crowd who subsequently beat him to death for randomly shooting at them. Because Jesus was all about the random murder.Straha wrote:While he was marrying people left right and sideways, including his friends' wives, receiving revelation that his first wife could sleep around, and telling people in no uncertain terms that the only way to receive exaltation was through Plural Marriage. Re: Lament 3: Cry Hard With A Vengeance
ADR is trolling and/or a Mormon and keeps cramming it down people's throats.
Just for the records if you want to talk about religion on my forum you're welcome to as long as it's chillaxed.

see I don't think he is cramming it down peoples' throats
I mean, no more than he used to cram whatever other insane fanfiction junk

Re: Lament 3: Cry Hard With A Vengeance
I don't see him cramming it down anyone's throat
It's a new thing for him and it makes him happy
He talks about it a bunch but as far as I can tell it's in relation to the existing conversations or about life events
Just because y'all are prejudiced against Mormons doesn't mean he isn't welcome to share his perspective
I've come to know and love many Mormons up here in the Edmonton area. They're pretty decent, tolerant, and often very accepting people. Don't be worse than that which you hate.

Dude their religion is one of hate and intolerance. Look up mountain meadows massacre sometime. If you don't want to be on my forum fine, but you're welcome to and without the inane rambling a of a fat sad sack who needs the easiest to disprove form of Christianity as a crutch to get through his daily life.
