If you're interested in this you should read Nauvoo Polygamy by George Smith, which is the only real in-depth study on the time period from what I remember. Very meticulously sourced and well-done.

I'm familiar with the overview of what you just said, but (more aimed at Flagg and such than you) I don't particularly care beyond an academic fascination: for sake of argument, suppose Joseph Smith (or even Jesus Christ for that matter!) was an outright child rapist or whatever nasty stuff anyone wants to say.
