I saw ANH on video. Then read a few novels and then saw ESB and RotJ come the special editions.

So ESB is all about working up to a twist I already knew. The Battle of Hoth is exciting and the duel is pretty good at the end but everything between is yawnsville to 11 year old me. *shrug*

Does the love story take precedent ir is it evenly handled with the sci-fi themes?

It isn't even a really a love store, there's maaaayyyyybe a little tension*, at most, but the closest to it becoming an actual love story is right at the end when they hold each other as the shockwave of a mini-blast from the Death Star roars towards them and they know they're about to die. Unless you mean the love between father and daughter, which actually serves as a motivation for the main character and, I thought, was handled very well.

*the kind you get when the characters might be into each other if they met through friends and not in the middle of a desperate fight for life and freedom

Edit: Wait, wait, wait. That's a description for the wrong movie... You were asking about Passengers.

So, I feel like the love-story started out okay. It made sense, at least to me, given the circumstances. I think the middle and pre-climax bits made sense overall, especially the reaction to a certain revelation, but the conclusion I can't quite make my mind up on. I can't quite decide whether it was right for the plot or right for the audience that doesn't like sad-ish or potentially ambiguous endings. And, honestly, if they wanted the happy ending, I can already figure out how they would make it work given the setup they had without really destroying the plot.

I am watching it right now... so far, my impression is that it is much better than The Boredom Awakens but I'm not finished with my opinion yet (I still have like an hour to go though).

but overall eh, i'd agree ANH is a far superior film

in fact to this day think anh is the best star wars film by a kinda large margin

I just finished the film. Again, unimpressed with the music... but I felt it was much better paced than the last few; it actually kept my attention and didn't feel overly long, while pausing briefly for decent effect. Still a few callbacks to old stuff, some of them worked but I wish they'd create some new memorable stuff. I did like a couple quality lines in here though, "there is no horizon" not bad, though not as good as ESB's quotes. And Vader's voice felt off, JEJ is getting old.

But my verdict at this point is that it is decent, maybe even good. I will reserve final judgement for when I see a non-bootleg version tho and watch it a second time. Overall though, I look forward to the second viewing when the time comes.

So my review is that I enjoyed the film but only because the second half seemed to tighten up and was relatively more focused than the first half, which was a muddled mess. The music was very underwhelming and some of the characters/performances fell flat for me (Forest Whittaker being the worst of that). That said, Ben Mendelsohn should be in more things.

I got a kick out of the CGI people. Thought Vader was one of the best parts of the film, and thought 'finally, they did the Tantive IV justice' although I'm ambivalent about how it was used in the film. Really loved seeing Y-wings do something for a change other than getting blown up. Would have loved to see the fleet fight each other more, the two ISDs and the Rebel Fleet didn't seem to be shooting much tbh.

Overall I enjoyed TFA more. But a huge part of that is because it was a STAR WARS film whereas this was a Star Wars EU film.

Tbh the x-wing air strike in the middle of the film was the worst for that. What a lame arse air strike. Literally all it did was kill a bunch of mooks. Modern day fighter jets would have blown up the whole facility.

Grand Moff Tarkin rain on everybody's parade, nuking Scarif, Rebels, Imperials, and all with the Death Star, partially to settle his internal intrigue with Director Krennic,

the Galactic Empire's chance for being a stable, durable regime was pretty much fecked as soon as A New Hope and was trapped in a economic/political/military death spiral before the Battle of Endor commenced. The Galactic Empire had frittered away much of its legitimacy and popular support (this shrinking goodwill permanently blown away with Alderaan), got bogged down in millions of insurgency campaigns throughout the Galaxy and had its Navy unable to hold down the systems everywhere, and so the Imperials became fatally fixated on the Death Star, a symbol for their own fear of losing control really, rather than a symbol of power.

The Death Star blowing up was a huge body blow the reeling Empire never quite recovered from and it was on borrowed time from that point on. And even if the Death Star repelled the Rebel attack at Yavin it was ultimately only a glorified giant hammer that would only work in the short term to suppress the intangible ongoing crisis of the galactic population's growing unease and dislike at Emperor Palpatine's one sided authority. Palpatine was forced to build a second Death Star to vainly shore up his rapidly crumbling credibility, even if his minions were probably unable to fully finish it (and perhaps why it was expended as bait at Endor).

And elderly and dysfunctional as the Senate was, Palpatine dismantling the Old Republic's institutions and re-distributing direct authority amongst his loyal Moffs and Grand Moffs to protect his absolute power was a paradox (shared with real life dictatorships) of the Galactic Empire sowing confusion while trying to impose order, having a horizontal military thugocracy that encouraged fiefdoms and squabbling (when you had the Empire's chain of command inhabited by magnates like Tarkin, Vader, Jerjerrod, Motti, and Krennic who couldn't stand the sight of each other), a relatively chaotic system which would no doubt erupt into open fighting once Palpatine was no longer at the wheel...
