That's genuinely illegal over here. You can't fire someone over a sick day, at least as long as they ring in to say 'I won't be able to come in because I'm physically ill'. I think it might have been an EU regulation, one of the types that the newspapers like to complain about.

I remember my sister was actually prohibited from coming into work when ill because she worked in a kitchen, and thus it was a violation of health and safety. Another EU regulation, I think.
Pretty sure it is here as well but they sometimes want a doctors note, depending on the company. But we also have days were you can call up and say "personal day, not coming in"

That shit has to be negotiated for though, unions good for that.

But... but... the government can handle that in place of the unions, surely.

I worked there, too. At Home Depot and Sears. It wasn't exactly high paying nor what I'd exactly call a good job, especially for someone like me who isn't particularly sociable. But I sure didn't get fired if I needed to take a sick day.

On the other hand, if I'd needed more than one I'd have needed a doctor's note or could have been fired.

I quit Sears 8 years ago and Home Depot just over 6 years ago when I started my career, so I don't think time since I was there is the reason.

Oh, I know. I'm in a "at will work" state. I've still never encountered something quite that extreme.

I'm not disputing that things suck and that people are often shat upon from a great height, I'm just shocked to hear some of this shit and as you know I'm living in one of the most anti-union states in the country.

No, it's literally "no reason". If they fire you for no reason they have to allow you to collect unemployment, though.

For Australia, part-time benefits scale by your hours too. So work fulltime hours, the company must pay you full-time benefits.

amusingly its the direct opposite of the 'work for a living' or 'get what you earn' mantra

in new york you're full time if you work over 35 hours i believe

but a lot of retailers will put you at 34 hours and juggle the schedule so if you overtime one week, you won't the next week and therefore don't fit the legal classification requiring the other shits

when they say "flexible hours" they aren't really being generous lol

In the U.S. if you tried to institute something like the benefits you're talking about, the largest employers would go "LOL, k we goin' to costa rica/philippenes/bangaladesh kbye"

My boss once pulled a fuckhead move and had me work 10 days straight over 2 pay periods so I couldn't collect overtime.

The problem is that it increases general unemployment as a side-effect.

The trick is to find something which balances out getting workers rights with making sure the workers actually have a job at the end of the day. Easier said than done. Much easier said than done.

Though we manage it in Europe. Sometimes.
