I'm sure the encode times would be longer if I were making longer videos. When I get around to cutting Sealab we'll see how long a ten minute clip takes.

Yeah. I have a measly core 2 duo 2.94ghz and 3gb of ram. The video card is a standard 1gb GT 220

You might still be able to run it but idk. Adobe's got a trial edition you can test drive if you aren't sure of your specs.

This website is running on a server with; dual Xeon 5150 with 16gb ram. The database is running off RAID1 500GB WD drives on a perc5, so if the server just stops on of the drives crapped itself because it's a western digital drive on a hardware raid controller.

There is a 160GB Intel 320 SSD which I can move the database onto if the load ever gets above 'non-existant'

Physically, the server is a second hand Poweredge 2950. And yes it is colocated.

Replaced the CPU from a xeon 5050 to two xeon 5150s, went from 4GB (512mb DIMMs) to 16GB, and put a bunch fo cheap desktop hard drives (some which are even rated for 24x7 usage!) and an ssd in it after ripping out the slim-line dvd to make room.

Bit of a getto job, but my wallet is so much better off for it. I think I spent the difference into new computer hardware for somewhere else.

Of course MySQL support pure-in-memory tables, after all they offer so many ways for you to lose your data. Not being able to loose everything would be too much of a step back for them to accept.

Hilariously, MySQL's in-memory tables performance isn't actually that much better than the same table living on a disk due to insane design.

2950s kick ass. The entire PowerEdge 2xxx series were just awesome. I got a 2800 new about 4-5 years ago that's going to make a wonderful Virtual Server for 5 hosts, including a video streaming server. Great value.

I knew MyISAM was baindead, but InnoDB has a single monolitic file it stores all InnoDB tables (including temp data) in by default which by design can not be shrunk. And it's been this way for over 9 years

But then again, these are the same type of bright sparks who thinkg ext2/3 are great filesystems so you can't expect too much from them.

There's a day in every IT guy's life when they realize that "cheap" should never be written in a design document.

Then, at some later point, they realize that if they can't write "cheap" on the design document, Open Source meets a lot fewer requirements.

Disclaimer: I'm a Windows/Office/VS/MS-SQL user and proud of it, and I even know how to use Visio and Project. I use Macs at home and support them, but that's starting to lose some of it's lustre lately. I just find myself wanting my tools.

i lose a lot of productivity on windows because it comes with chess and solitare and minesweeper

Amusingly, I recall that Linux distributions generally come with a shitload more integrated games than the base 5 or 6 included in windows.

My old debian laptop even had a Singularity strategy game included in the base install

yea but the linux games suck

linux solitare for instance looks like windows solitare but it is a pain to use; it doesn't react to the clicks like the windows one so you do a lot of dragging which is just painful

and the linux chess doesn't have variable difficulty that actually works so it isn't as fun cuz you either win every time or lose every time

linux minesweeper is ok i guess.... i don't remember any specific complaints about it other than the default game board is too big for me but you can adjust it



there's other random games too but they all have something wrong with them. either a pain to use, lack of reply value, or just plain boring

so it isn't as distracting

I'm currently in the process of preparing for my stepfather's probable death. Shit after shit after shit. He falls, fucks up his hip, requiring replacement. Before they can do it, his colonic inertia caused a surgery. He's put back in physical therapy. Today, he was unresponsive due to low vitals and a bowel movement was indicative of internal bleeding. So, he's back in the hospital awaiting a CT scan. He has been away from home for a month or so, and as result I've been evaluating my feelings for him as I knew I would. Let's just say they aren't as negative as they used to be.
