a lot people seemed to do that
i only played story mode in AC FA which is the same engine
people used to try that even back in AC1. the tradeoff was you couldn't launch with a lot of weight and thus few heavy weapons
of course, most people just beat AC1 to get the launch overweight perk that you could carry through to the two expansions

is this normal or are there Disadvantages to that sort of design?
There were a couple of regulations (ie. different sets of game balance rules) which really favoured infinite flying. For a while rifles were like the total winner all the time and they were best used if you were just constantly flying, but other regulations favoured different designs. Infinite flight was less useful when blading was king, it was pretty useful when missiles were etc
Generally speaking AC4/FA's mechanics heavily favoured guys who could regularly and repeatedly quick-boost, and basically the best set ups for those are those can also generally fly forever. My robot was too fast to effectively fly forever and I didn't have enough memory to counter it with tuning, so I stayed on the ground. It supported way less variety than ACV in style, though it wasn't quite as bad as Stark might suggest (though it's pretty close
)

Gawd, these are some fuck-ugly robot designs. I mean, not only do they look bad from an aesthetic point of view, they don't even seem functional.
Done well, an appearance of functionality could excuse an ugly design, and vice-versa ; but to be ugly and look impractical at the same time ?
Well, that's what you get when your worldbuilding is shit and you can't hire competent artists, I guess ?
No.

he's got a website and still does stuff
but yeah some of the robots like the Hatchetman are ok
and I love the Dervish for some reason but most renderings of it outside the original artwork are terrible
gotta love how the best artwork is just the stuff he TRACED OVER from Japanese artwork

About these sketches :
How much is from the artist' supposed lack of talent, and how much is from his clients having "specific" requests ?
No.

I don't think there was much oversight over what got into the books
http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Crab
considering that they kept this thing relatively unchanged for decades, I don't think anyone cared what was going on
I look at my books and wonder just how many of them have the same 30 pages of rules reprinted each time

if your vehicle resembles an mc escher painting something has probably gone horribly wrong
