Muslim holidays would fuck things up since they're on a lunar calendar, and they're a small minority. Hindus are a small minority, and last I checked they're still on a lunar calendar. Sikhs have shifted their calendar to the Gregorian one but they don't have much in the way of holidays (as in days off). They already just schedule everything based on Canadian long weekends or on Sundays. If they had a tradition of taking days off during certain times of the year there might be impetus to actually mark it off for everyone, but its not likely to happen. And again, they're a small minority (but not as small as the first two).

It's definitely not his best (Zodiac) and I don't think he brought his A game, but it's still the best movie I've seen this year. It felt like there was something missing, perhaps passion for the project. As procedurals go, it's very, very good.

I agree with pretty much everything you just said, except that my favourite film this year was almost certainly Hugo. But yeah, partially because it was very obviously compressed from the novel, it just didn't have the same, I dunno, purity of atmosphere that Zodiac or Se7en did. The climax didn't really affect me and then the denouement tried to cover what was a giant subplot which weaved its way through the whole book, and it meant that the movie had a good twenty minutes at the end that were a very different feel from the rest.

It wasn't bad, but it stopped short of greatness, which is still a step down from the usual for Fincher.

Watching Se7en, Zodiac, and Dragon Tattoo back to back would be a treat.

i think the problem with fincher

is that he made the best procedural of all time in zodiac

i'm not being an over-enthusiastic geek when i say that, i genuinely can't think of any procedural i've ever seen that was anywhere near as gripping or memorable as zodiac

so it would be hard for him to live up to my expectations
