Re: Godammed SDN
Lincoln wanted to end slavery in the US, and he wanted the US to stay a coherent nation.
When the two came into conflict, he realized that one of those priorities might have to supercede the other.
People may need to give up something they want in order to get something they want even more. Who knew?
Anyway, why the north was fighting is largely irrelevant. Even if the north fought solely because Jefferson Davis said something mean about their mothers, the south precipitated the conflict, and they seceded because they thought Lincoln was going to take away their slaves.

Re: Godammed SDN
Dude some politicians write letters entirely for posterity because they've read history books and know how historical research worksLosonti Tokash wrote:they're probably less likely to do it in their private letters, i'd think
Seriously look at Churchill he minuted shit just so he could quote them later
Re: Godammed SDN
When he left office he basically stole heaps of documents that, while his thoughts or whatever, were the property of the state
So he could write his autobiographical history shizz; his history of ww2 is full of that shit and he even gloats about it a bit
I seriously doubt that kind of political jobbing was unique to the British bulldog
The idea that politicians naively felt their personal correspondence was a safe place to unburden their innermost soul is a strange one
Just read wiki even

I'd expect this understanding of the historical process is at least as old as caesarHe said several times: "I will leave judgments on this matter to history – but I will be one of the historians." To circumvent the rules against the use of official documents, he took the precaution throughout the war of having a weekly summary of correspondence, minutes, memoranda and other documents printed in galleys and headed "Prime Minister's personal minutes". These were then stored at his home for future use. As well, Churchill actually wrote or dictated a number of letters and memoranda with the specific intention of placing his views on the record for later use as a historian

damn son LESS likely jeez
Re: Godammed SDN
I'm just speaki in general terms
Any given letter could be a totally honest reflection of a persons beliefs
Or it could just be another tool in their life of politics
Pointing at s letter and saying THIS PROOFS THE SUBJECT never truck me as very convincing
But I understand Lincolns beliefs are accessible in many ways from many sources so y'know
Without the moral justification of slavery the war is pretty funny
I mean letters as propaganda is maybe 3000 years old at least y'know

Re: Godammed SDN
I know there's a general avoidance of committing certain conversations to paper. Lots of short meetings, phone calls, but no letters, emails, texts, anything that can be easily shared.
Re: Godammed SDN
The obvious corollary is that stuff committed to paper instantly becomes useful in the way using those methods avoids
Plot your death camps via secret messages
Publish your disgust for slavery in letters to notables
Which will survive to reach historians ? Lol

Re: Godammed SDN
I didn't think about the Seven Years war, but I did the Napoleonic. Just had a brainfart.
Thought process:
Worse than civil war: Napoleonic, WW1, WW2, yup those all came later.
Somehow there was this correlation between Napoleon and the Civil War, but I'm pretty sure that was Napoleon the third.
Edit: you know, it would be a lot less confusing if the europeans would not number their monarchs. I mean 16 Louis? We're they just that uncreative?

For the Dutch musical groups, see Napoleon Complex (band).
After hearing it on the news so much lately I wanted to start an indie band called Austerity Measure but it turned out that's already a thing in Texas

there was an aristocats two?
speaking about movies, avengers is disturbingly fascist in its approach to superheroes, what with the real conflict being between a group of oligarchs and a single despot as to who will rule the world, ending in the world of superheroes. discuss.
