Re: Share your favorite Star Wars memories
doesn't the main problem the EU has really just stem from Star Wars (being movies) being properties with a lot of texture but little substance? i mean yeah it's a dirty cobbled together looking universe but nobody ever goes on about the price of grain on Dantooine or anything really important What ...

Re: Share your favorite Star Wars memories
I can't hate Karen Traviss, not when Lucas low-balled the number of clones that Kamino was churning out in Attack of the Clones. Yeah yeah the dialogue was about 'units', but most of the time unit = 1 of something. Like anytime someone says we have x number of units it usually means 1 of something....

Re: Share your favorite Star Wars memories
It isn't really that hard to justify space fighters! I think these worries come from too much dogma or a bit of setting mismash - they are halfway between the space opera and hard sf mindset, and that leads to some contradictions. When you dive right in and really try something new, there's all kin...

Re: Share your favorite Star Wars memories
anything that is overelied on can become a 'crutch'. It isnt the fault of the idea or concept, its the fault of the writer (or generally the people involved.) That 'crutch' thing can be applied to virtually any idea. Including carbon nanotubes. Indeed I believe that some hard science fans use realis...

Re: Share your favorite Star Wars memories
I dunno. At least as far as UC gundam goes (what I've watched) I find it all rather interesting and plausible. If anyhting, Gundam has made me more tolerant of alot of the hard science nerd concepts like 'you don't have to leave the solar system to tell interesting stories' even though that is used ...

Re: Share your favorite Star Wars memories
I havent watched a SW movie probably since AOTC. I bought the videos out of nerd-analysis and compulsive habit but I havent watched them back to back in a long time. (I watch Lord of the Rings more often actually LOL.) I just don't retread the sutff I'm already familiar with (at least the movies) be...

Re: Share your favorite Star Wars memories
Star wars is 'dead' only in the sense its changed from the franchise we used to know, which means its 'dead' in the same way Star Trek is dead, or the sort of computer/video gaming we used to get is dead. Things change, time moves on, but its that nostalgia factor that drives us to feel that apparen...

Re: Share your favorite Star Wars memories
I remember demolishing the shit out of those Kenner die cast STar Wars playsets. I loved those things and the little die cast figures, although they got all beat up to hell. I also liked to make blast doors out of clay for my jedi to slice through or stormtroopers to blast through. Because what good...

probably explains 40k (lol explain yeah right) imperial guard in a way since they probably need to ship shitloads of tank rounds and that logistic strain doesn't need to be increased by also having to ship ammo for infantry also HAY! I was wondering what would be, realistically, the best use that could be done of laser weapons in settings where high-density power sources are both compact and reliable ; and laser themselves can output a high amount of power in a relatively compact package. Near as I can tell from ...

Re: The Testing Chat III: The Time of Great Chatting
Prices always go up and never down anyway, so raising salaries in general would allow people to be able to reduce their level of debts, increase their savings and/or spend more. But we can't have that because, you know, increasing salaries by 25% will COMPLETELY kill how COMPETITIVE we are on the W...

You can blame the Status quo thing on the formulaic approach Trek had. I dont know if they could have maintained alot of the development they did and still had the show, but in isolation it was still quite good.

I've just seen that I've been on this board for exactly one year now. Woah, time sure does fly. Wait til 10 years pass and see how you feel then. Did that on SB. I feel way older than everyone else. And more ornery. 'Why in my day we didn't HAVE an ICS. We had to get our gigatons the OLD FASHIONED ...

That's interesting. See, the fact AI and humans live in symbiosis together is one of the center point of the setting, along with its completely "transhuman" [1] aspects. But I hadn't given much thought on what it would mean, in practice, to live in such a society. Indeed, one of my primar...

Re: The Return of Testing Chat Thread
I find my enjoyment of the LOTR movies was greatly enhanced by an ability to treat them as being separate and distinct from the LOTR books, rather than the two needing to be inextricably tied together. I have also noticed that many people's lack of enjoyment of said movies tend to stem from lack of ...

I might be if I'd ever played an Elder Scrolls game. I've had Morrowind sitting in some chest where I stored all my old computer games, but for one reason or another I never quite got around to playing it, or Oblivion, or Skyfall. Maybe one of these days. I shall take the dishware theft under advise...

- AI and humans have lived together for so long that both are in some kind of symbiotic relationship with each other. Most humans grow together with a companion AI. Reading this made me think immediately (for some reason) of a sort of 'boy and his dog' sort of story. And then I thought of Lassie. T...

Honestly I think people should avoid N&P like the plague if they value their lives. I consider it the primary cause of all the conflict, ill will, and degeneration of whatever positive things SDN had. The place is just downright poisonous and leads to nothing but stress and frustration.

I haven't asked, but I'm guessing numbers weren't on his mind at all. One time I remember being asked if I was going to college, and without putting in a single second's thought, replied "yes", thinking "of course, what do you think I am, some kind of loser?" Money did play into...
