How much are you looking to spend? There's literally a ton of options for HDTVs in the sub-$600 range.

It really depends on what you want to spend. If money is no object I'd go with an LED LCD.

2012 models just came out, so I'd go to a store and demo some. Play with the settings there and ask if they can show less-compressed video, specifically a Blu-ray. Flagg recommended an LED LCD. I recommend them too, but be on the lookout for edge-lit TVs because there are problems with lights emitting from the sides. It's very noticeable if you watch things with the lights out.

You may be able to find good deals on 2011 models.

Thinking on it, I figure something in the $1000-1200 range should be a good price. I spent some time at lunch browsing online and I saw the following models:
LG Plasma
Sharp LED
Panasonic Plasma

Would something along those lines work fairly well or am I drinking Draino? (Yeah. I know. Best Buy. I don't care right now I'm just trying to figure out what constitutes a decent deal.)

LG makes a good set, but my model is an LCD that I've had for about two years now. Can't really comment on Sharp or Panasonic.

Research online. I researched over the course of weeks before deciding on an LCD within my price range.

Most out of it? At the risk of sounding glib: to be able to watch it. Really, so long as it's about the size of my now dead TV and reliable I'm not especially picky.

We have a Panasonic Plasma TV, a 2008-2009 "Viera", and it's pretty good actually. It has good contrasts, lot of connections (3 HDMI ports, 2 SCART ports, 1 SD-card slot, RCA-inputs/outputs, etc...).

Something you have to take into consideration though :

- If plasma has a better life-expectancy than LCD, the device itself is more delicate, and it has to remain vertical at all times (no hanging it on a wall at an angle), lest the plasma cells would become damaged.
- Plasma consume more energy than LCD, so if you want to reduce your energy bill or something that may not be the best choice.
- Plasma hate static images - it damages the plasma cells to stay in the same state for too long. So this can be an inconvenience while playing videogames : if you have to put the game in pause for a while, just switch back to normal TV to avoid any damages.


Apart from these point, Plasma tend to have a far better image quality than LCD as far as I know (which is not much).

That's what I ended up going for; it's what they had available and within what I was willing to spend. Maybe not the same model as you, but the same brand and tech: a 50" Panasonic Viera Plasma TV.

When we bought a DVD player in 2000, our TV didn't have A/V plugs so we had to go to Dick Smith to get a scart lead.

We never knew what it was for until then. I don't think I've seen one since.
