and there was that time last year when the minister of education suggested 40 million pounds of public money be spent on buying the queen a new yacht, at a time when libraries were closing due to lack of funds

but even david cameron immediately saw that was a terrible idea and released an official statement saying "god no that's a dumb idea"

i mean at least shit like the jubilee or royal weddings get extra national holidays

That's one of the complaints I've heard about them, and probably about the only one I'd care about. They cost the government money to keep in their "royal lifestyle" or whatever and do...something?

Yeah, I know some of the royal family does some charity work and all that so I guess it's kinda like, I dunno, having an entire family of First Ladies from the US perspective. That's probably useful.

As far as I know, the British crown is mostly used as a tourist attraction, so you would have to put into context how much they cost the government, with how much they give back directly (through taxes and shit) and how much tourists spend over things directly related to the crown.

As far as I know they give back directly to the government more than they perceive. I could be wrong, though.
