but even david cameron immediately saw that was a terrible idea and released an official statement saying "god no that's a dumb idea"

That's one of the complaints I've heard about them, and probably about the only one I'd care about. They cost the government money to keep in their "royal lifestyle" or whatever and do...something?

Yeah, I know some of the royal family does some charity work and all that so I guess it's kinda like, I dunno, having an entire family of First Ladies from the US perspective. That's probably useful.
How much government money do they get, though? Honest question. Like their royal residences and stuff. How much would, say, limiting them to Buckingham Palace save, for instance?
