Re: Bitching bitching.
I think Straha's on to something with his use of entirely barbless insults; words that indicate the other person is insulting you but have no intrinsic hurtfulness. "Falafel" and "butt" and stuff like that.Civil War Man wrote:You know, when you take a step back, it's interesting to consider how people are asking which insults they are allowed to use without offending people. The purpose of an insult is to offend, so wouldn't any word that could be considered sufficiently inoffensive not really be fit to be considered an insult?

Fun fact: Cunt is periodically used as a term of endearment here.

Everyone's cool if I start using 'nigger' as a 'term of endearment', right? I mean, it's all in the tone of delivery.Gands wrote:Fun fact: Cunt is periodically used as a term of endearment here.

All humans... hell, all animal life produces excrement. It's an unappealing subject unbound by race, gender, or orientation, so yeah, it's a 'safe' insult.Oxymoron wrote:What about "dipshit" and other scat-related expressions ?
Re: Bitching bitching.
Duly noted.
Oh, and what about insults which would imply the targeted person is (un)dead to various degrees and/or cannibal ?
Trying to work out what is and isn't acceptable. You know, for science.

Re: Bitching bitching.
I think calling people zombies is fine.
Re: Bitching bitching.
But what if zombies exist and I offend them ?

There's only one way to make sure !

Re: Bitching bitching.
This isn't that hard, though I suspect you know this and are being obtuse for reasons best described as childish.
1: If an insult involves comparing someone unfavorably to an existing group with a history of discrimination/persecution, question whether you value using that specific slur over their comfort in not having something they consider a part of their identity completely disregarded and mocked for the sake of an offhand insult to someone else entirely.
2: If someone takes genuine offense to something you didn't think was offensive, the decent thing to do is say "Sorry, I didn't know," and try to refrain from using that slur in mixed company. The petulantly childish thing to do is complain about how nanny-nazis are infringing upon your freedom of speech and demanding a ridiculously hyperbolic list of what is and is not okay to say.
Is being a decent person really this much of an unreasonable burden?

Re: Bitching bitching.
English is his second language, so I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to asking questions like 'what English insults/slurs should I avoid'

*genuinely smile*
Djinn... I know that. But it only reinforce your point to keep explaining it like you did, to argue the point precisely and without ambiguity. And that is great.
As for the questions ? I was trying to turn away the subject of this thread from "let's see who can shitpost the most" to "let's come up with the most ridiculous non-offensive insults we can".
In short, I was trying to de-dramatize this whole clusterfuck.

Sadly I would have taken that as a slam against Twilight before a gay slur.Oxymoron wrote:What you sayin', sparkly [1] ?

Re: Bitching bitching.
From what I've read, the etymology for "jerk" as an insult came from locomotives, not masturbation. Plus, its use in American English at least is entirely based around the person being mean, not anything that should avoid being insulted. So it seems in the clear to me
Re: Bitching bitching.
Cool ! One less insult I'll have to worry about if it offend people !
Thanks !

Re: Bitching bitching.
There's a difference between a word being reclaimed by the group it was used to hurt and it continuing to be used by those to whom it wasn't directed.
